This week, I am on the cover of french jazzmagazine Citizen Jazz. They have published an interview with me, and a review of "Daughter of the
Sun". Read it all in french here: https://buff.ly/2prc54f

Or read the interview in english:

1 / Hanna, can you introduce yourself?
I am a saxophone player and composer from Rygge, Norway. I grew up on a small farm with a father who was a jazz drummer, and started playing saxophone at the age of 16. I have two bands of my own that I write music for, Hanna Paulsberg Concept and GURLS. I have a bachelor degree in jazz from Trondheim Jazz Conservatory, and currently I am studying a master degree in jazz at the Jazz Conservatory in Oslo.

2 / In your last album, Daughter of the Sun, we are captivated by your very warm sound, and by this mix of energy and determination. Does this positive way of approaching music reflect your personality?
Haha, that is hard for me to say. I think I can be both warm and cold, but for me, the warmt in music has always been very important. That is why I love the african-american jazz tradition so much. There is a warmt there that I often find is lacking in more modern european jazz. As for the mix of energy and determination, I guess that reflects some of my personality. There is no doubt you need both to be able to survive in this business..

3 / How was the meeting with Magnus Broo, who accompanies you in this album? How did you choose the musicians from your Concept orchestra?
Having Magnus join us was a special experience. The four of us (Hans, Trygve, Oscar and me), have been playing together for nine years now, since we were quite young. We have been through alot together, the road to finding your own sound as a musician, and as a band, and we have had good times and bad times. Sometimes when you play together that long you can also go into some patterns that you keep repeating, both socially and musically. Magnus is older than us, and a very relaxed person. He has no need for showing off, even though he can outplay anyone if he wants to. I think his warm and kind personality, and his openness to music and how to express oneself made all of us interact in a different way than we were used to. We became more relaxed, and we dared to do things differently. I think you can hear that in the music.

4 / The Norwegian scene is booming right now, maybe more than twenty years ago, how do you explain it? Do you feel at the forefront of this movement? Has the renaissance of the Odin label contributed to it?
I don't think I have ever felt like I am in the forefront of anything. But we are lucky in Norway to have good funding systems for jazz, at least for now. That gives musicians the opportunity to explore the music they want to, however alternative and not commercial it is. I think this freedom is extremely important, it brings a diversety that benefits everyone, and from that suddenly something completely new and different pops up.

5 / Was an orchestra like the Trondheim JazzOrkester, of which you were a part, very important in this visibility?
Maybe it has been. It is always hard to see things from the outside, but I imagine that the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra has played some role in Norways visibility on the international jazz scene. Again, this is a project which stands firmly rooted with a good and solid system around it, with sponsors and a board and everything. That again gives the opportunitly to play alot of concerts abroad, be visible, pay musicians and composers properly, do projects with big stars and dare to take the chance on new music.

6 / You often quote Sonny Rollins or Stan Getz in your models, are there any more contemporary? What is your view on the current European scene?
Wayne Shorter has also been a very big influence, both as a player and composer. It feels like he has a very open way of seeing music, and the world. Also, the people close to me here in Norway that I meet often are very inspiring. Some of the teachers I had in Trondheim, Eirik Hegdal for example, is one of my biggest inspirations. For me, I get inspired just as easily by people who play totally different music than I do, sometimes maybe even more inspired. I am not sure if I am up to date on everything that is happening on the european scene right now. But if I should mention some of the people I dig, I could say Eve Risser, Laura Jurd, Heida Mobeck, Signe Emmeluth, Mette Rasmussen, Matilda Rolfsson and Anja lauvdal, just to name a few cutting edge people that are truly awesome and happening right now.

7 / You have also worked with Bugge Wesseltoft. How do you approach electronics when you have your more classical jazz background?
Working with Bugge was extemely fun, he is a interesting guy, different from all the other people I have played with. The music was very groove-based, which was alot of fun. And Bugge also has a openness that is very inspiring.
And it is interesting that you ask, because I found working with electronics a little bit challenging. Maybe it mostly has to do with the volume, that it was higher than I am used to. I mainly work with acoustic jazz, and I think it is very challenging to keep the acustic feel where overtones and details get the space they deserve when things get to loud. It is also difficult to find the bridge between electronic and acoustic instruments that gives both parties the space they deserve. But it can be liberating as well, maybe it gives you a freedom to play different than you usually do. I have a new project that I am a part of, where there is tuba and electronics, and alot of synths, in addition to two horns and drums. It is truly a very exciting project to play with, because it is so different from everything else I do.

8 / With Daughter of The Sun, you pay homage to the figure of the Egyptian Queen Hatchepsut for what she represents, a powerful woman in a patriarchal society. With Gurls, you animate a feminist trio ... Does the current jazz leave enough room for the woman?
I think we have to take the room we want. And I think it is very different in the different countries how far things have come when it comes to equality. Some countries they dont even let me carry the equipment because I am a girl. In Norway have come to the place where most journalists have stopped asking me questions about being a female musician. But there is no doubt that the history and the ways things are done on the jazz scene in general has been shaped by men, and it can feel challenging at times for women to find their own. I have found that the best thing for me is just to focus at what I want to do, which is to play saxophone and make good music.

9 / Recording Daughter of The Sun, is it to perpetuate the tradition of a jazz that fights domination and alienation, on the ground of feminism?
Not at all.

10 / What are Hanna Paulsberg's upcoming projects?
There is alot of touring with GURLS at the moment, and I am getting ready for a tour in Norway and Sweden with Hanna Paulsberg Concept. These are the two projects I am playing most with at the moment, but I will also do some ad hoc stuff, and a couple of other projects during the spring/summer. Meanwhile, I am trying to finish my master degree at the jazz conservatory in Oslo, which is also alot of fun. Earlier this month I was surprised to get the message that both "Daughter of the Sun" by Hanna Paulsberg Concept and "Run boy, run" by GURLS has been nominated for a Norwegian grammy in the jazz category this year. I feel extremely honored, humble and thankful for this recognition. The ceremony will be on march 30th, and I am looking forward to sharing this evening with the rest of the nominees.
The first was pianist Espen Bergs comissioned concert with Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, a piece he based on several mathematic structures. It was a lot of fun, and the music turned out beautifully! A little bonus came the day after when the Jazz Orchestra received a mail from an eager member of the audience, who wrote that it had been one of the biggest musical experiences of his life. This turned out to be none other than Pat Metheny! What a nice surprise for both Espen and the orchestra.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The day after Hanna Paulsberg Concept played a sold out show at Storyville, and it was a lot of fun! National paper Dagbladet was at the concert and wrote a really nice review:

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span lang="EN" style="font-family: "times new roman"; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Courier;">On the other hand, something
causes my soul to vibrate is the saxophone game of Hanna Paulsberg. I have yet
to attend a concert where she does not add anything extra. The same can also be
said of her drummer Hans Hulbækmo, who has a childish curiosity: He makes every
battle sound like the first of his life.
The two remaining members of Hanna Paulsberg Concept - pianist Oscar
Grönberg and bassist Trygve Fiske - are also obviously very gifted and what
makes the four-clover work well together is their knowledge and willingness to
underplay. The highlight of their one and a half hour short concert is a jingle
song and beautiful spiritual treat in Pharaoh Sanders' spirit. It feels like
getting wrapped up in a nice and soft blanket and lying down in Mother Earth's
lap.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">We are overwhelmed by all the positive feedback we have gotten from France of our album Eastern Smiles, and after our concert in Paris in january. The french magazine Jazz News wasat our concert and did an interview with me that is published this month. Here it is both translated and the page in french from the magazine:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">At first
she didn’t like jazz. Now things have changed : this 29 year old Norwegian
brillantly condenses a whole part of the history of saxophone. The first great
discovery of this new year.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The sound of Hanna Paulsberg is like her handshake, solid and warm.
Before this meeting backstage, we ignored the existence of this young Norwegian
saxophonist. We are in January 2017, the 22nd, Hanna and her quartet play for
the first time in Paris, at la Maison de la Radio, as part of the concerts
« Jazz Sur le Vif » organized by France Musique. Immediately, she
evokes the history of her instrument : the tenor saxophone. Stan Getz for
the languishing and whispered
phrases. Sonny Rollins for the rhythm and staccato playing, with sudden
crescendos and decrescendos. The sound is round, full, wooded. During the same
concert, later, we’ll even think of Dexter Gordon. But Rollins seems to be the
most obvious influence. This is suggested by her new album Eastern Smiles : the writing of the
tunes is quite complex, funky and the rhythm section often features a Caribbean
atmosphere. Yet, all the musicians on the disc (and on stage) are real
Norwegian and met 7 years ago at Trondheim university. This band, is the one
Hanna put together to take her final exam. Since then, the quartet has released
three albums. The first one was reminiscent of Coltrane’s approach, a second
one that was transitional, and finally this Eastern
Smiles of which we like everything : the melodies, the improvised
parts, the textures, the alternation between writing and freedom, as well as
the duration. Because in 2017, while we are used to 70 minute records, this one
is only 39.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span lang="FR" style="font-family: "times"; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Hanna has grown up in a farm southwest of Oslo. Her father, Hakon Paulsberg
was a jazz drummer. She used to hate this music. « It was before i came
across a compilation, gathering Stan Getz & Antonio Carlos Jobim »,
she explains befor her concert. « This day, I wanted to become Stan
Getz ». Her first reference. Her everything. By the way, she’s surprised
to be talked about Rollins whom she never really listened to. On the other
hand, she mentions Fredrik Ljungkvist - her Norwegian hero -, Wayne Shorter,
Ben Webster and Lester Young, that she discovered throughout her training. In
high school, she’s bored with theories and be bop, « it lacks
emotion ». In her town, nobody plays jazz. Even her father eventually gave
up on his drumstiscks. No traditional repertoire either. With her eyes fixed on
America, she was not interested in the Nordic
Tone. Ten years later, here she comes to France Musique. On stage, the
speeches between the tunes are laborious. But the music sweeps everyone off
their feet.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We had a great tour last week that ended with an amazing
trip to Paris, playing a sold out concert at Radio France. The french Jazz
Magazine was there and wrote a really nice review/report from the concert. To
read it on their webpage in french, click here: http://www.jazzmagazine.com/jazz-vif-onj-europa-oslo-hanna-paulsberg/

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Here is an english translation:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The young saxophonist was playing for the first time in
France with the quartet that accompanied her on her three records as a
bandleader, including the very recent Eatsern Smiles (Odin Records / Outhere).
Trained at the famous Trondheim conservatory (on the Westcoast, north of Bergen
and Oslo), she played with the finest musicians of the Scandinavian scene,
including Bobo Stenson, and shined in New York at Chick Corea’s side, during
the Blue Note festival. Her passion for Stan Getz led her to jazz and tenor
saxophone, but we can also perceive the influence of Sonny Rollins through her
recurrent references to Calypso, the aerial convolutions and this inexhaustible
energy. Her finely-shaded playing also recalls Stan Getz, especially because of
her ability to project the sound with strength without spoiling the mellow
aspect. Sometimes, we also think of the translucent and wrapped in melancholy
sound that we can hear in Charles Lloyd, but, here, with a more confident
accuracy. The tunes and their developments are well built, the band is
homogenuous, which reveals a long-time complicity. We can hear, behind the
soloist, the trio venturing into a kind of a very relevant collective
improvisation, without losing sight of the saxophonist whom they eventually
catch up with at the end of chorus. On the first tune, the pianist plays a solo
with his right hand playing « out » while the left hand keeps playing the
initial harmony, thus creating a kind of bitonal illusion with an expressive
strength that is disconcerting. The drummer softly sets up a tension that makes
the music lively, and when it comes to the solo during the penultimate
composition, he delivers a very energetic polyrhythm, without any affectation
or ostentation. A great discovery for an audience, clearly captivated (just
like me), and the hope of listening to this great musician again, in a French
festival.
He is celebrating his 75th year with a long residency at Blue Note Jazz Club in New York, and he has invited Trondheim Jazz Orchestra to come and play with him there, two concerts a night, two nights in a row, on november 16th and 17th. We will be playing Erlend Skomsvoll's amazing arrangements of Chick Corea's music, they are equally beautiful as they are demanding!
I could pick the musicians to participate and I would write whatever music I wanted, and Victoria would book a tour and handle everything else. The first musician I thought about was pianist Bobo Stenson, because it had been a long time dream to be able to play with him. I also asked Laura Jurd on trumpet, Mats Eilertsen on bass and Hans Hulbækmo on drums to join me and they all accepted. This last year I have written music and prepared for this moment, and now it is soon happening. In a couple of weeks we will all meet up in Oslo, and rehearse a couple of days before we go on a small tour in Norway. It is pretty exciting, at the point of nervewrecking, but I am looking extremely forward to meeting the others and start to play together.

Here is the tour plan:

Sept 21: Eidsvoll Jazzklubb
Sept 22: Victoria National Jazzscene, Oslo
Sept 23: Arena, Moss
Sept 24: Bodø Jazzklubb
I am looking forward to playing with different projects at some really nice festivals in the Nordic countries. My quartet will play at Kongsberg and Sildajazz and Oslo Jazzfestival has asked us to to a concert with one of Norway's finest tenor players through the years, Knut Riisnæs.
I also look alot forward to playing with Skrap and Trondheim Jazz Orchestra at Molde Jazz Festival. This project is already sounding really cool at rehearsals, and I think the premiere at Moldejazz will be epic.
Last week was spent at Jon Balke's house in Hov, rehearsing for the concert we will do with Ellen Andrea Wang at Kongsberg Jazzfestival. It is really inspiring to be able to work with a musician like Jon, who has done so many different interesting projects, not to mention that he is an amazing piano player! I hope to play more with him later.

"the chemistry is ever-more pronounced and the collective playing on
undeniably strong material is absolutely first-rate. In short, a quartet
that would grace any stage in the world."

"Of special note from the up-and-coming camp: The Hanna Paulsberg Concept
affirmed the saxophonist/leader’s growing reputation as a voice to keep
tabs on (especially beyond her native Norway). With tasteful soloist
wits and awareness of space and phrasing, a strong melodic sense as a
composer, she led an impressive young group, highlighted by the exciting
and imaginative drummer Hans Hulbækmo, also in the Moskus Trio and,
recently, inducted in the Scandinavian left-end-jazz supergroup Atomic."
We are extremely happy and excited, and looking alot forward to the releasetour that will start next week. The album is available on cd and vinyl and of course also digitally. This release is also a little special for us because our new label is Odin, the legendary label founded by the norwegian jazz foundation in 81. Many great norwegian jazz records was released there during the 80's and 90's, most famous is probably Radka Toneff's 'Fairytale'. Our new album 'Eastern Smiles' is the first new release since 1993.
